Growing up I always remember my mom making orange slush when she was going to have a big group of people around. She would sometimes even make a batch for us kids…without brandy of course. Ahhh it just takes me back to the good ol’ days.
After 7 long months, I decided it was time to go see my mom. She lives about 4 hours from our house. I haven’t seen her since January. We stayed away as long as we could. We got our Covid tests and after getting negative results, the kids and I made the trek. There are so many wonderful parts about being at my mom’s. She lives on a lake, she has different toys for the kids to play with, and just the idea of not having to maintain the house for a while is so nice. I was pretty desperate to see her. This has been the hardest part of CoronaVirus. My fear of getting her sick kept us away. But after 7 months I just felt it was time.
We have a definite plan in place to try to avoid getting her sick or vice versa. I have to remind her to back away. She tries to help out with the kids, which normally I would die for, but I want her to keep her distance. We hang out in the basement mostly because there are two couches. She sits on one and we sit on the other. We’ve limited what bathrooms she uses. I tried to have my kids not use the main floor bathroom but…they are too scared to go up or downstairs alone, ugh! If we are in the car we wear masks. (PS my friend makes the best masks, they are hilarious, please go check them out here) Stupid masks fog up my darn glasses, but it’s all worth it and unfortunately I just think we need to do this for a while. I bought my kids their own masks that are for kids which really helps, they actually fit their face. I’ve gotten tons of compliments and questions on where to buy them, so here is the link.

I brought up the movie projector which has been super fun! We set up the movie in her bonus room bedroom. There are two beds and a couch. She lays on the couch and we lay on the beds. I’m proud of my kids. They know how to keep their distance and are doing their very best. My mom is the one I have to remind the most…but can you blame her?
My mom has beautiful waterfront property and a great pontoon. We sit in the pontoon while the kiddies swim, kayak, paddle board, and jump on the lilypad. Little Man has been collecting little shells, Sissy is trying new adventures like the kayak and paddle board. Bubba has no fear…he never has…so he does everything from fishing to driving the mower to kayaking. I love getting to see my kids get to disconnect from devices and friends for a week and just be. They love it here and so do I!
While we were sitting watching the kids my mom asked if I wanted a slushy!! Yes, Yes I do!!! Ahh they are so good and refreshing. I knew I had to share them with you because…they are DELICIOUS!
Recipe
- 1 cup of sugar
- 4 bags of black tea
- 1 (16 oz) can of lemonade
- 1 (16 oz) can of orange juice-best if pulp free
- 2 cups of brandy
- 5 cups of boiling water
Directions
- Boil 5 cups of water. Use 2 cups of boiling water and steep black tea for 10 minutes. Take the remaining 3 cups of water and put into a container you can freeze everything in. (My mom always uses a gallon ice cream bucket)
- In the 3 cups of boiling water dissolve the the sugar. Then add in the orange juice and lemonade concentrate. Mix all together until well combined.
- Add in the brandy to the mixture.
- Remove the tea bags from the water and mix in the tea.
- Freeze overnight.
- When you are ready to serve, get a cup and scoop in desired amount and top with lemon lime soda!
- Most important…enjoy the deliciousness of the Brandy Slush!

This is a drink that totally reminds me of growing up. My mom would make some non-alcoholic kind for us sometimes. (It’s tricky because without the booze it freezes differently) This drink is awesome in the summer but it could be used as a fun holiday cocktail, just add a sugared cranberry for decoration and bam a holiday drink it is.

So as we enjoy some time at the cabin, in the water, and outdoors we drink our Brandy Slushy and just enjoy finally getting to see each other! With the Pandemic changing how we all live and how we all interact together it really makes you appreciate things that make life feel just a little bit normal. Getting to be with my mom definitely did that. And getting to drink her yummy Brandy Slush also gave a nice warm feeling!
