I’ve decided 2020 is going to be a great year. For 4 years I’ve been writing down at least one thing a day that made me happy. Looking back, there are some themes, mostly work related and special times I’ve spent with my son. Some days there is a lot to write about and some days, hard days, I struggle to write at all…However, in the 4 years, there has not been a single day where I couldn’t think of at least one thing made me happy.
Often it’s a little thing. A smile from someone I admire, an unsolicited hug from my son, the way the sun glows though my living room shades in the afternoon, finishing a project I’ve been putting off, etc. Sometimes the entries are completely personal and random. Laying on the floor listening to a Radiohead deep track, getting told by my son to stay out of his room because he’s making me a birthday present, made the perfect cup of tea, nailed a presentation at work…I’m driven by accomplishments and they do make me happy. I’m also driven by social connections and these are the comments that make me smile as I read through my journal.
Thinking and recording things that make life meaningful everyday adds joy and hope to my life. It allows me to take a moment to acknowledge the little things that make life so wonderful.
